Even the most finely crafted wood cabinets can start to wear down after years of use. All that opening and closing, all those run-ins with dust, and all that exposure to light can cause your cabinets to lose the lustre they had when they were first installed. But that doesn’t mean that it’s time to replace them all. There are a few cabinet refreshing ideas that will help spruce up your cabinets to make them look younger, or just to give your kitchen or bathroom a new look.

Cabinets don’t have to blend into the background

After a while, cabinets can become like wallpaper in your kitchen or bathroom. You know they’re there, but you don’t really pay much attention to them. That can all change with the right coat of paint. As long as the frames and doors of the cabinets are in proper working condition, you can give them a good cleaning, and then brush on a new coat of paint.

Before applying paint to your cabinets, use some cleaning solution to wipe the exterior surface, and use some sandpaper to smooth out any rough patches that may have been created from the usual use. The right colour of paint can add some brightness or warmth to the room. Or use lighter shades for a cooler, more polished look.

Reface your Kitchen Cabinets

If your cabinets are showing more serious signs of wear – like scuffs, scratches, and stains – you might want to reface them. You can use veneer to give your cabinets a fresh face. Some manufacturers even offer peel-and-stick veneer which makes the job that much easier.

If the doors are aged and worn, you might want to consider spending on some new doors. You don’t have to overhaul your cabinetry entirely, so long as the frame is still in good shape. Contact a woodworking company to see how new doors can be crafted for your existing frame.

Tack on some trim

Another way to revitalize your cabinets is to add crown moulding. The trim at the top of your cabinets will create an integrated look with the rest of the kitchen or bathroom. To help simplify the process, consider mounting the moulding on a hardwood frame that will sit above the cabinets.

Change how your cabinets are used

Typically cabinets are used to store items away from plain sight. But what if you wanted to tweak your existing cabinets to store things differently. A plate rack is a unique way to store your dishes. All you need to do is remove the doors from a few cabinet spaces and install vertical strips of wood at the front of each space. Then slide your plates in between the strips to keep them in place. Your cabinetry will be a source of visual interest, and you could potentially free up some storage space in the remaining closed off cabinets.

What’s on the inside matters

Keep in mind that you can also spruce up your cabinets by changing things up inside them. For instance, you can install a pull-out shelf in one of your base cabinets. That shelf will slide out to give you easier access to the items you keep at the back of the cabinet.
