Over time, kitchen cabinets can obtain all sorts of damage from frequent or rough use, sticky fingers, and all the daily living that happens inside your Oakville kitchen. If you are looking to refresh the look of your kitchen cabinets without the cost of replacing them entirely, then refinishing can work wonders – as long as the damage is fairly minor.

What is cabinet refinishing?

Refinishing is when the old paint or finish is stripped from your cabinet doors and replaced with a new one. The old finish is removed with either a chemical remover or lots of sanding – but usually, it’s a combination of both. Once the old finish is removed, and the doors are prepared, they can be stained or painted with a fresh coat in the original or a completely new colour.

What damage can be repaired with refinishing?

Refinishing your kitchen cabinets can work wonder for minor damage that has not penetrated the finish layer itself. Some of the damage that refinishing can repair includes:

  • Peeling, faded, or discoloured finish.
  • Stains.
  • Minor scuffs.
  • Light scratches.

In some cases, refinishing may also save cabinets that have been moderately damaged – such as scratches that have reached the underlying wood but haven’t threatened the integrity of the cabinet. Applying filler to deeper gouges, dents, and scratches may be able to camouflage them so that when the new finish is applied, your cabinets can look new again.

What damage cannot be fixed by refinishing?

A skilled cabinet refinisher can restore cabinets with various types of damage, but unfortunately, some cabinet damage may not be able to be restored through this method. If the damaged area is very large or if the integrity of the cabinet is compromised, you will likely have to replace part or all of the cabinetry.

Some types of damage that cannot be repaired through cabinet refinishing include:

  • Wet or dry rot.
  • Damage from termites.
  • Major cracks.
  • Mould.
  • Warped wood.
  • Moderate or severe water damage.

In cases where you have this more extensive damage, there are two scenarios. In the first scenario, if the damage is restricted to a small section, you can replace just the damaged section without having to replace all of your cabinetry.

In the second scenario, the damage is more widespread. In this case, it may be best to go ahead and replace all of your cabinetry rather than trying to save severely damaged cabinetry which may have mould, rot, termite damage, etc.

Is cabinet refinishing right for you?

Cabinet refinishing can be a cost-effective way to save cabinets that have minor damage. It can also be a great way to update your Oakville kitchen without going the expensive route of getting completely new cabinetry.
