Your kitchen gets a lot of use: you eat every day, it can be a gathering place for conversations before dinner and, it may even be the central gathering point when you host parties with friends. Having a kitchen you love is crucial to loving your home. So, if you’ve decided to renovate your kitchen, you’re probably looking at new cabinets as part of the process. There are so many options when it comes to picking new cabinets: finish, material, design, and so on. One of the first decisions you’ll need to make with cabinets is whether you want custom cabinets or pre-fabricated ones. There isn’t one right option to suit everyone’s needs, so if you’re having a hard time picking between custom and pre-fabricated cabinets for your new kitchen here’s what you need to know about each option.

Pre-Fabricated Cabinets

Pros

If you are renovating a kitchen on a budget, pre-fabricated cabinets are a fantastic way to get a completely brand-new kitchen. Many manufacturers offer custom options within the pre-fabricated cabinet budget. You can select the style of the cabinet doors, the finish, the hardware and so on. Many will also offer pantry style cabinets if this is what you’d like to have in your kitchen. Pre-fabricated cabinets are not set in stone, you do have choice so that you can choose what will best work with your tastes and your kitchen.

Cons

Even if a pre-fabricated manufacturer is offering custom options, they aren’t truly going to be custom. The components the cabinets are already built, so the custom piece is that you get to pick where the drawers go, if you have a pantry, the style of the cabinet doors and so on. The measurements of your kitchen will not be taken into account, so you will have to measure to make sure the pieces of this style of kitchen fit where you want it to go. Some angles may be off and you could see gaps in the finished product.

Custom Cabinets

Pros

As the name states, this option is truly custom and will be fit to the space you have. A contractor will come out, measure the space, and talk to you about what you want the kitchen to look like and how you use it. The cabinets will be built to your specifications so everything will fit perfectly together. You can also select the finish, hardware and cabinet doors you want to give you a truly custom look. If you have a specific style in mind, or want to combine two looks together, custom can help you achieve your desired look much better than pre-fabricated can.

Cons

The biggest, and possibly, only drawback to custom cabinets is the price. Depending on the size of your kitchen, the materials you choose and the look you want this can become very expensive and can easily blow the budget of any kitchen renovation. A good contractor will be able to give you a realistic quote to help you determine if custom is within your budget.
