As much as you love the kitchen in your Oakville home, changing up the décor every so often can give your home a fresh and renewed look. Renovating your entire kitchen every couple of years, though, is not exactly budget-friendly, so you may be looking for a way to refresh your kitchen without completely replacing your kitchen cabinets. Refacing or refinishing the cabinets in your kitchen is a much more budget-friendly option. If you can’t decide between refinishing and refacing, here’s what you need to know.

Cabinet Refacing

Cabinet Refacing is sometimes called resurfacing, and it means taking the doors from your existing cabinets and replacing them with new ones. Your cabinets (the shelving and the exposed parts) will be stained or painted to match the new look of your cabinet doors.

This option is a quick process, so you are not without a useable kitchen for too long, and it is very affordable.

Cabinet Refinishing

Cabinet Refinishing involves removing the cabinet doors and drawers from your existing kitchen. They are then sanded or stripped to have the existing finish removed before a new paint or stain is applied to complete the desired look. Your cabinet doors and drawers will then be put back in place.

Refinishing is different from refacing because you are still using the same physical doors and drawers, just stained or painted differently, as opposed to buying new doors and keeping the same physical cabinets and shelving.

Refinishing is also an affordable and quick option that won’t tie up your kitchen for weeks or months at a time.

Before making a decision

Before you determine whether you should reface or refinish your cabinets, you’ll need to consider a couple of factors to make sure your kitchen cabinets qualify for this process.

First, if you are refinishing, then almost – if not all – the components of your kitchen much be in good working order. If you are refacing, then it’s ok if the doors or drawers are damaged because they are going to be replaced anyway. However, in both cases, the cabinets, boxes, and shelving will stay, so it’s important to check their functionality and make sure the cabinets themselves are in good shape.

You will also want to check the drawer slides. Older kitchen designs often didn’t have soft-closing options, so you may want to take this time to replace the hardware on your doors and drawers with soft-closing options.

Certain designs and materials cannot be refinished, so it’s also important to look at the type of kitchen cabinets you have in your Oakville home.
