Is it time for the kitchen in your Oakville home to get a makeover? Our kitchens are often the most used areas and are one of the first places to show wear and tear. One of the best ways to make your kitchen look fresh is with new cabinets, but cabinets can be one of the biggest price tags in a kitchen renovation. Instead of replacing your cabinets though, you could refinish or reface them – but which one? Here’s a little more information on refinishing and refacing your kitchen cabinets.

Refinishing Cabinets

The cabinet refinishing renovation method involves keeping all the components of your existing kitchen cabinets, but you’re changing either the colour or the finish. This could be done through sanding or chemically stripping the colour/finish that is currently there. It is important to note that you can only refinish wood cabinets.

Refacing Cabinets

Refacing your cabinets means you are keeping the “box” part of your kitchen cabinets but will be changing out the doors and hardware for a more updated look/finish. With this option, you can also replace the panels, face frames mouldings so that everything matches and looks like it goes together.

Are you trying to choose between refinishing and refacing?

As long as you have wood cabinets, both refinishing and refacing are valid options as one of them isn’t necessarily better than the other. In this case, it will come down to your desired end look and your budget.

If you don’t like the style or look of your cabinets , then why not repaint them? They’ll just be the same style in a different colour. Another consideration is if you’re going to be adding to the kitchen – like putting in an island – it could be hard to find cabinets that exactly match the ones you have , so refinishing may not be an option if that is your renovation plan.

The cost of Refinishing VS Refacing Cabinets

On average, refinishing your kitchen cabinets will be about 60% of the cost of refacing them. So if budget is your top priority, or you really only have a set amount of money to spend, then refinishing might be the best option for you to freshen up your kitchen.

In some cases, refacing your cabinets can cost up to 70% to 80% of total budget if you were planning on replacing them entirely. The exact cost will be based on the size of your kitchen, the door style you’re looking for, the finish and the cost of labour.

More and more Oakville homeowners are choosing to refinish or reface their cabinets because both are more budget – friendly options than replacing them entirely.
